De lucht is zwart. Ik fiets alleen op de weg. Er zijn alleen velden hier. Geen huizen, geen mensen. En dan begint het.

De regen valt hard. Heel hard. In een paar seconden ben ik nat. Mijn kleren plakken aan mijn lichaam. Mijn haar plakt aan mijn gezicht. De wind blaast en het is koud.

Ik stop. Ik kijk om me heen. Waar ga ik heen? Ik zie niets. Alleen regen en grijs.

Mijn naam is Femke. Vandaag is mijn vrije dag.

Of toch?

Dan hoor ik een stem.

"! Kom hier!"

Ik kijk. Daar staat een man.

"Kom! Het is hier droog!"

Ik twijfel. Ik ken die man niet. Maar de regen valt zo hard. En het huis is dichtbij. Mijn benen zijn moe en koud. De donder is luid. Ik denk even na. Dan beslis ik. Ik fiets snel naar hem toe.

Ik stap af. De man pakt mijn fiets. Hij zet hem onder een dak.

"Kom binnen," zegt hij. "Snel."

We rennen naar de deur. Buiten valt de regen op mijn rug. Bram doet de deur open. We gaan naar binnen. Binnen is het warm en droog. Ik ben blij. De regen tikt op het raam. Het is een fijn geluid nu. Een veilig geluid.

"Dank je," zeg ik. "Echt. Dank je."

"Geen probleem," zegt de man. Hij lacht. "Je bent helemaal nat."

"Ja," zeg ik. Ik lach ook. "Heel nat. En heel koud."

"Kom maar binnen," zegt hij. "Hier is het warm."

Ik kijk naar hem. Hij is groot. Hij heeft donker haar en bruine ogen. Hij draagt een blauw shirt. Het is ook een beetje nat. Hij is mooi, denk ik. Maar dat zeg ik niet.

"Ik ben Bram," zegt hij. "Dit is mijn boerderij. Ik woon hier alleen."

"Ik ben Femke," zeg ik.

"Hoi Femke." Hij geeft me een hand. Zijn hand is warm. "Welkom in mijn huis."

"Wacht."

Hij loopt weg. Ik sta bij de deur. Ik druip op de vloer. Ik schaam me een beetje.

Bram komt terug. Hij heeft twee handdoeken. Hij geeft me er een.

"Hier," zegt hij. "Droog je af."

Ik pak de handdoek. Ik droog mijn gezicht en mijn haar. De handdoek is zacht en warm. Het ruikt schoon. Bram droogt ook zijn haar. Zijn haar staat nu alle kanten op. Ik moet lachen. Hij kijkt naar mij. Ik kijk naar hem. We lachen allebei.

"Wat is er?" vraagt hij.

"Je haar," zeg ik. "Het is grappig."

Bram lacht. "En jouw haar dan?"

Ik voel aan mijn haar. Het is nat en plat. "Oké," zeg ik. "Wij zijn allebei grappig."

"Je kleren zijn nat," zegt hij. "Dat is niet goed."

"Ja," zeg ik. "Maar het is oké."

"Nee," zegt hij. "Wacht. Ik heb wel iets."

Hij loopt weer weg. Ik kijk uit het raam. De regen valt nog harder. De lucht is heel donker. Ik kan niet weg. Niet nu. En eerlijk? Ik wil ook niet weg.

Bram komt terug met een grote trui. Hij geeft hem aan mij.

"Trek dit aan," zegt hij. "Je natte shirt kan op de stoel."

Ik kijk naar de trui. Dan kijk naar hem. Mijn hart gaat snel.

"Oké," zeg ik zacht.

Bram draait zich om. Hij is lief. Ik trek mijn natte shirt uit. Mijn huid is koud. Ik trek de trui aan. De trui is groot en warm. De trui ruikt naar hem. Het is een goed gevoel.

"Klaar," zeg ik.

Bram draait zich weer om. Hij kijkt naar mij in zijn trui. Hij zegt even niets.

Bram maakt koffie. Ik kijk naar zijn handen. Ze zijn groot en sterk. We drinken samen. De koffie is warm en sterk. Buiten dondert het. Het licht in de kamer flikkert. Even is het donker. Dan weer licht.

"Spannend," zeg ik. "Een storm."

"Ja," zegt Bram. Hij kijkt naar mij. "Heel spannend."

We praten. Over mijn werk in de winkel. Over zijn boerderij. Hij heeft koeien en een grote tuin. Hij werkt veel. Hij woont hier al drie jaar. Hij is tweeëndertig. We lachen veel.

Heel stil." Hij kijkt naar mij. "Vandaag is het niet stil."

Ik lach. "Nee," zeg ik. "Vandaag niet."

Ik drink mijn koffie. Mijn hand trilt een beetje. Niet van de kou. Bram ziet het. Hij zegt niets. Maar hij lacht zacht. Ik word warm van die lach.

Buiten valt de regen nog harder. De wind blaast tegen het raam. Maar binnen is het warm. En Bram zit dichtbij. Te dichtbij voor mijn rust.

Bram zit dichterbij nu. Ik voel zijn arm bij mijn arm. Mijn hele lichaam voelt het. Ik kijk naar zijn mond. Hij heeft een mooie mond.

"Femke," zegt hij zacht.

"Ja?"

"Mag ik dichtbij komen?"

Ik kijk hem aan. De storm is buiten. Maar de storm is ook hier, in mij.

"Ja," zeg ik. "Kom dichtbij."

Hij komt dichtbij. Heel langzaam. Mijn adem stopt bijna. Hij legt zijn hand op mijn wang. Zijn hand is warm en groot. Hij kijkt naar mijn mond. Dan kust hij me. Heel zacht. Zijn lippen zijn warm.

Ik kus hem terug. De kus wordt langer. Mijn hand gaat naar zijn nek. Zijn hand gaat in mijn haar. We kussen en kussen. Ik wil niet stoppen.

Bram stopt even. Hij kijkt me aan.

"Wil je dit?" vraagt hij. "Echt?"

"Ja," zeg ik. "Ik wil dit. Heel erg."

"Mooi," fluistert hij. "Ik ook."

Hij kust me weer.

Heel langzaam.

"Echt."

Ik raak zijn gezicht aan. "Praat niet," fluister ik. "Kus me."

Hij lacht en kust me weer.

"Je maakt me gek," zeg ik.

Bram lacht zacht. "Dat is goed," zegt hij.

Zijn hand gaat tussen mijn benen. Hij raakt me aan, langzaam. Ik ben al nat daar. Niet van de regen. Van hem. Ik kreun hard. Mijn rug komt omhoog.

"Ja," fluister ik. "Daar. Ja."

Zijn vingers bewegen langzaam. Dan sneller. Ik adem hard. Mijn hele lichaam trilt. Het voelt zo goed. Ik pak zijn arm vast.

"Bram," zeg ik. "Ik wil jou. Nu."

"Wacht even," zegt hij.

Hij staat op. Hij pakt iets uit een la. Een condoom. Hij is veilig. Dat vind ik fijn. Hij trekt zijn broek uit. Hij is hard. Ik kijk naar hem en ik wil hem zo erg.

"Kom hier," zeg ik.

Bram komt weer op mij. Hij kijkt me aan. Zijn ogen zijn lief en vol vuur.

"Klaar?" vraagt hij.

"Ja," zeg ik. "Ik ben klaar."

Hij gaat langzaam in mij. Heel langzaam. Ik adem in. Het voelt warm en vol. Hij stopt even.

"Gaat het?" vraagt hij zacht.

"Ja," fluister ik. "Het is goed. Ga door."

Hij beweegt langzaam in mij. In en uit. Langzaam.

Onze stemmen.

"Femke," kreunt hij. "Wat voel je goed."

Ik kus hem. Hij beweegt en beweegt. Ik voel iets groots komen. Diep in mij. Het wordt sterker. Mijn hele lichaam spant zich.

"Ja," zeg ik. "O ja. Niet stoppen. Niet stoppen."

"Ik ben dichtbij," zegt hij.

We bewegen samen. Sneller en sneller. En dan komt het. Een grote golf. Mijn lichaam trilt en trilt. Ik kreun hard. Op hetzelfde moment kreunt Bram ook. Hij stopt diep in mij. Zijn lichaam trilt op mij.

We liggen stil. We ademen hard. Zijn hoofd ligt op mijn borst. Mijn hand ligt in zijn haar. De regen tikt nog op het raam. Maar zachter nu. De storm is bijna weg.

"Wauw," zeg ik. Ik lach.

Bram kijkt naar mij. Hij lacht ook. "Ja," zegt hij. "Wauw."

"Dat was..." Ik zoek het woord. "Dat was mooi."

"Ja," zegt Bram zacht. "Heel mooi."

We liggen lang zo. Warm en samen. Zijn hand gaat langzaam over mijn rug. Op en neer. Het is een fijn gevoel. Ik wil hier blijven. Buiten wordt het licht. De storm gaat weg. Maar ik wil niet weg.

"De regen stopt," zeg ik zacht.

"Ja," zegt Bram. Hij kust mijn schouder. "Jammer."

Ik lach. "Misschien," zeg ik. "Of misschien niet."

Hij kijkt me aan. "Wat bedoel je?"

Ik kom omhoog. Ik kus hem op zijn mond. Langzaam.

"Ik woon niet ver," zeg ik. "En ik fiets graag. Ook in de zon."

Bram lacht breed. "Dan kom je terug?"

"Ja," zeg ik. "Ik kom terug. Met of zonder regen."

Bram pakt mijn hand. "Beloof je dat?" vraagt hij.

"Ik beloof het," zeg ik. En ik meen het ook.

"Goed," zegt hij. Hij trekt me dichtbij. "Dan wacht ik op je."

Buiten is de lucht weer blauw. De zon komt door het raam. Het licht valt op de grond. Op zijn huid. Op mijn huid. Maar ik blijf nog even. Hier, op de zachte grond, in zijn armen. De fiets kan wachten. De weg kan wachten. Alles kan wachten.

Ik kijk naar Bram. Hij kijkt naar mij. En ik weet het al: ik kom heel snel terug.

The Rain

The sky is black. I cycle alone on the road. There are only fields here. No houses, no people. And then it begins.

The rain falls hard. Very hard. In a few seconds I am wet. My clothes stick to my body. My hair sticks to my face. The wind blows and it is cold.

I stop. I look around. Where am I going? I see nothing. Only rain and grey.

My name is Femke. I am twenty-eight. I work in a shop in the city. Today is my day off. I want to cycle, alone, far away. I like doing that. I live in a small house in the village. Sometimes it is quiet there. Sometimes too quiet. So I often go outside. But now I don't want that anymore. Now I just want to be dry.

The rain falls in my eyes. I can hardly see anything. My shoes are full of water. It is cold, very cold. I pedal even harder on the bike. But where am I going? There is no house nearby. Or is there?

Then I hear a voice.

"Hey! Come here!"

I look. A man is standing there. He is standing by a farm. It is an old house of red brick. The man waves his arm.

"Come! It is dry here!"

I hesitate. I don't know that man. But the rain is falling so hard. And the house is nearby. My legs are tired and cold. The thunder is loud. I think for a moment. Then I decide. I cycle quickly towards him.

I get off. The man takes my bike. He puts it under a roof.

"Come inside," he says. "Quick."

We run to the door. Outside the rain falls on my back. Bram opens the door. We go inside. Inside it is warm and dry. I am happy. The rain taps on the window. It is a nice sound now. A safe sound.

"Thank you," I say. "Really. Thank you."

"No problem," says the man. He laughs. "You are completely wet."

"Yes," I say. I laugh too. "Very wet. And very cold."

"Come on in," he says. "It is warm here."

I look at him. He is tall. He has dark hair and brown eyes. He is wearing a blue shirt. It is a little bit wet too. He is handsome, I think. But I don't say that.

"I am Bram," he says. "This is my farm. I live here alone."

"I am Femke," I say.

"Hi Femke." He shakes my hand. His hand is warm. "Welcome to my house."

I look around. It's a big room. There's a couch and a table. There's a fireplace, but there's no fire. On the wall hang old photos. On the table lies a book. It smells of coffee and wood. It's a warm house. A good house.

"You're cold," says Bram. "Wait."

He walks away. I'm standing by the door. I'm dripping on the floor. I'm a little embarrassed.

Bram comes back. He has two towels. He gives me one.

"Here," he says. "Dry yourself off."

I take the towel. I dry my face and my hair. The towel is soft and warm. It smells clean. Bram dries his hair too. His hair sticks up in all directions now. I have to laugh. He looks at me. I look at him. We both laugh.

"What is it?" he asks.

"Your hair," I say. "It's funny."

Bram laughs. "And what about your hair?"

I feel my hair. It's wet and flat. "Okay," I say. "We're both funny."

"Your clothes are wet," he says. "That's not good."

"Yes," I say. "But it's okay."

"No," he says. "Wait. I do have something."

He walks away again. I look out the window. The rain falls even harder. The sky is very dark. I can't leave. Not now. And honestly? I don't want to leave either.

Bram comes back with a big sweater. He gives it to me.

"Put this on," he says. "Your wet shirt can go on the chair."

I look at the sweater. Then I look at him. My heart beats fast.

"Okay," I say softly.

Bram turns around. He's sweet. I take off my wet shirt. My skin is cold. I put on the sweater. The sweater is big and warm. The sweater smells of him. It's a good feeling.

"Done," I say.

Bram turns back around. He looks at me in his sweater. He says nothing for a moment. His eyes are dark.

"You look beautiful," he says then.

I get warm. Not from the sweater. From his words.

"Thank you," I say.

We go sit on the couch. Not too close. But not far either. Bram makes coffee. I look at his hands. They're big and strong. We drink together. The coffee is warm and strong. Outside it's thundering. The light in the room flickers. For a moment it's dark. Then light again.

"Exciting," I say. "A storm."

"Yes," says Bram. He looks at me. "Very exciting."

But I don't think he's talking about the storm.

We talk. About my work in the shop. About his farm. He has cows and a big garden. He works a lot. He has lived here for three years now. He is thirty-two. We laugh a lot. It's easy to talk with him. Too easy, maybe.

"And do you like living here?" I ask.

"Yes," he says. "But sometimes it's quiet. Very quiet." He looks at me. "Today it's not quiet."

I laugh. "No," I say. "Not today."

I drink my coffee. My hand trembles a little. Not from the cold. Bram sees it. He says nothing. But he smiles softly. I grow warm from that smile.

Outside the rain falls even harder. The wind blows against the window. But inside it's warm. And Bram sits close by. Too close for my peace of mind.

Bram sits closer now. I feel his arm against my arm. My whole body feels it. I look at his mouth. He has a beautiful mouth.

"Femke," he says softly.

"Yes?"

"May I come close?"

I look at him. The storm is outside. But the storm is also here, inside me.

"Yes," I say. "Come close."

He comes close. Very slowly. My breath almost stops. He puts his hand on my cheek. His hand is warm and big. He looks at my mouth. Then he kisses me. Very softly. His lips are warm.

I kiss him back. The kiss grows longer. My hand goes to his neck. His hand goes into my hair. We kiss and kiss. I don't want to stop.

Bram stops for a moment. He looks at me.

"Do you want this?" he asks. "Really?"

"Yes," I say. "I want this. Very much."

"Good," he whispers. "Me too."

He kisses me again. Now harder. His hand goes under the sweater. He touches my skin. His hand is warm on my belly. I breathe fast. My skin wants more.

"Your skin is so soft," he says softly.

I pull off his shirt. His chest is warm and strong. I lay my hand on his chest. I feel his heart. It goes fast, just like mine.

Bram pulls the sweater over my head. Now I'm almost naked. He looks at me. His eyes are full of fire.

"How beautiful you are," he says.

He kisses my neck. Then my shoulder. Then lower. His mouth is warm on my skin. He goes slowly. Very slowly. I moan softly. My hands go into his hair. I want more. I want everything.

"Don't stop," I whisper.

"No," he says. "I won't stop."

We move from the couch onto the floor. A soft rug lies there. Bram lies on top of me. I feel his body. It is heavy and warm. The rain taps hard on the window. The storm grows stronger. And so do we.

He kisses my breast. His mouth is slow. He takes his time. His beard tickles on my skin. It feels so good. I moan again. My body moves on its own. I want him close. Very close.

Bram looks at me. "You are so beautiful, Femke," he says softly. "Really."

I touch his face. "Don't talk," I whisper. "Kiss me."

He laughs and kisses me again.

"You drive me crazy," I say.

Bram laughs softly. "That's good," he says.

His hand goes between my legs. He touches me, slowly. I am already wet there. Not from the rain. From him. I moan loudly. My back arches up.

"Yes," I whisper. "There. Yes."

His fingers move slowly. Then faster. I breathe hard. My whole body trembles. It feels so good. I grab his arm tight.

"Bram," I say. "I want you. Now."

"Wait a moment," he says.

He stands up. He takes something out of a drawer. A condom. It is safe. I like that. He takes off his trousers. He is hard. I look at him and I want him so badly.

"Come here," I say.

Bram comes back on top of me. He looks at me. His eyes are tender and full of fire.

"Ready?" he asks.

"Yes," I say. "I'm ready."

He slowly goes into me. Very slowly. I breathe in. It feels warm and full. He pauses for a moment.

"Are you okay?" he asks softly.

"Yes," I whisper. "It's good. Keep going."

He moves slowly inside me. In and out. Slowly. I feel him completely. My legs wrap around his body. I pull him closer. I want him deeper. He kisses my neck. He whispers my name.

"Femke," he says. "You feel so good."

I can't talk. I can only feel. His body, his skin, his breath on my neck.

"Harder," I whisper. "Bram. Harder."

He moves harder. Our bodies are warm and wet with sweat. The ground is soft. The storm thunders outside. But I only hear us. Our breathing. Our voices.

"Femke," he groans. "You feel so good."

I kiss him. He moves and moves. I feel something big coming. Deep inside me. It gets stronger. My whole body tenses up.

"Yes," I say. "Oh yes. Don't stop. Don't stop."

"I'm close," he says.

We move together. Faster and faster. And then it comes. A big wave. My body trembles and trembles. I groan loudly. At the same moment Bram groans too. He stops deep inside me. His body trembles on top of me.

We lie still. We breathe hard. His head lies on my chest. My hand rests in his hair. The rain still taps on the window. But softer now. The storm is almost gone.

"Wow," I say. I laugh.

Bram looks at me. He laughs too. "Yes," he says. "Wow."

"That was..." I look for the word. "That was beautiful."

"Yes," Bram says softly. "Very beautiful."

We lie like that for a long time. Warm and together. His hand moves slowly over my back. Up and down. It's a nice feeling. I want to stay here. Outside it's getting light. The storm is going away. But I don't want to go.

"The rain is stopping," I say softly.

"Yes," Bram says. He kisses my shoulder. "Too bad."

I laugh. "Maybe," I say. "Or maybe not."

He looks at me. "What do you mean?"

I sit up. I kiss him on his mouth. Slowly.

"I don't live far," I say. "And I like to cycle. Even in the sun."

Bram grins broadly. "So you'll come back?"

"Yes," I say. "I'll come back. With or without rain."

Bram takes my hand. "Do you promise that?" he asks.

"I promise," I say. And I mean it too.

"Good," he says. He pulls me close. "Then I'll wait for you."

Outside the sky is blue again. The sun comes through the window. The light falls on the ground. On his skin. On my skin. But I stay a little longer. Here, on the soft ground, in his arms. The bike can wait. The road can wait. Everything can wait.

I look at Bram. He looks at me. And I already know it: I'll come back very soon.
